Naples, the Curia also committed to finding accommodation for the displaced people of Scampia

Yesterday afternoon, at the request of the Prefect of Napoli Michele di Bari, a meeting was held to address the issue of housing arrangements for families who will soon have to leave their homes in the Red and Yellow Sails of , in view of the start of demolition and reconstruction work.

The meeting was attended by the Mayor of , Gaetano Manfredi, together with the Councilor for Legality Antonio De Iesu, the Chief of Staff Maria Grazia Falciatore, the Commander of the Local Police Ciro Esposito, the Provincial Commander of the Guardia di Finanza, representatives of the Police Chief and the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, the Provincial Commander of the Fire Brigade, the President of the 8th Municipality Nicola Nardella, the President of Acer, the Vicar General of the Bishop of Naples, the Director of the diocesan Caritas, the Archbishop's Delegate for Charity and Justice, the Parish Priest of the Church Maria Santissima del Buon Rimedio in Scampia and representatives of the inhabitants of Vele.

During the meeting, the difficulty families have in finding accommodation emerged, due to the reluctance of owners to rent them properties, despite the availability of funds for their independent accommodation.

The Prefect stressed the importance of joint action between institutions to promote a social awareness campaign, inviting citizens to contribute to solving the problem by providing housing.

The Mayor reiterated that it is necessary to inform the owners that these families will have access to financial contributions, guaranteed by the Municipality of Naples and accounted for, until the completion of the new housing that will be assigned to them.

The message to convey is that the stay in these accommodations will be temporary, just long enough to complete the properties envisaged by the “Restart Scampia” project, the works for which will begin with the demolition of the Vela Gialla in the first months of 2025.

Furthermore, based on the data provided by the Municipality of Naples regarding housing needs, the has committed to finding suitable accommodation not only in the Scampia area, but also in nearby neighborhoods and municipalities, with priority given to families with vulnerable individuals.

The working table established by the Prefect will be permanent, with weekly meetings. The Mayors of the Municipalities bordering Scampia will also participate in the next meeting, together with the Parish Priests of the respective areas.
