One of the two confirmed victims of the explosion at the Eni depot in Calenzano, near Florence, is a Neapolitan. Vincenzo Martinelli, a 63-year-old native of Naples, is a tanker driver. The other confirmed victim remains unidentified.
Three people are missing in the explosion. The five missing include—in addition to the identified victim—a 57-year-old worker from Catania, a 49-year-old worker from the province of Novara, a 45-year-old worker born in Germany but of Italian origin, and a 45-year-old worker born in Matera.
They were all driving tankers. According to initial reconstruction, the explosion occurred while fuel was being loaded onto one tanker. The explosion then affected the other parked vehicles.
To understand precisely what happened, the prosecutor of Prato, Luca Tescaroli, appointed three consultants, some forensic doctors and delegated the Carabinieri, firefighters and technicians of the ARPAT to carry out the investigations.
The accident had a significant impact on traffic in the area, leading to the closure of train services. Additionally, the Calenzano exit on the A1 motorway was closed in both directions due to the fire caused by the explosion.
Local and operational impact
The explosion was so powerful that it was felt in several nearby towns, causing concern among the local population. Authorities quickly responded to the situation, implementing emergency measures to ensure the safety of those in the surrounding area.

Explosions are always terrible, but I hope that the families of the victims will receive adequate support. Life is precious and every loss is a blow to the community.
I think we need more security in fuel depots, it is not possible that these things happen so easily. We must be more attentive to these incidents to protect everyone.
This is a big disaster and I am so sorry for the victims. I hope the authorities find the missing people soon. It is important to know what happened to prevent it from happening again in the future.
