Naples – The redevelopment work of Piazza del Plebiscito, one of the symbolic places of the Campania capital, has officially begun, with an intervention that will conclude in 2027 and that will redesign its face.
The restoration of the colonnade, supervised by the State Property Agency, began today, with the removal of graffiti and the restoration of the original surfaces. Furthermore, the new lighting of the colonnade and the façade of Royal Palace. The timetable foresees the start of the recovery of the rooms under the colonnade in autumn 2025, while the design of a sophisticated lighting system that will affect the entire square and the surrounding buildings will be completed at the beginning of 2026.
The overall project has an economic value of 5 million euros: 3 million come from the Ministry of the Interior through the Fec (Fondo Edifici di Culto), owner of some of the rooms under the colonnade, while the Municipality of Naples has allocated 2 million for the lighting plan.
“Intervening on Piazza del Plebiscito is complex due to the overlapping of competences and the presence of stringent constraints,” explained Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, underlining the need for alternative solutions for lighting, avoiding the installation of lighting fixtures inside the square but exploiting the facades of the buildings.
As for the 11 premises located under the colonnade, the State Property Agency will operate on behalf of the Fec. In a first phase, the spaces will be intended for temporary uses, to then be permanently assigned and transformed into a showcase dedicated to quality craftsmanship “Made in Naples”.
