San Nicola la Strada – Despite ongoing law enforcement interventions, the "drug dealing roundabout" in San Nicola la Strada, a town notorious for drug trafficking, continues to be a hub for the illegal drug market. Yesterday, Carabinieri officers from the Caserta Carabinieri Operations and Mobile Unit arrested two drug dealers, a 33-year-old and a 31-year-old, who were caught selling hashish to a young buyer.
The peculiarity of the case is that both of the arrested had already been hit by precautionary measures for similar crimes. The 33-year-old, in particular, was wanted for a custodial order in prison issued by the judge for preliminary investigations of the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The military, charged with notifying him of the measure, tracked him down at the roundabout, where he was caught red-handed along with his compatriot. During the search, two coins and several doses of hashish ready for sale were found on him.
Yesterday's is just the latest in a long series of anti-drug operations conducted in this area, located on Viale Carlo III, a busy artery that connects several municipalities in the Caserta area and ends a few hundred meters from the Royal Palace of Caserta. Despite frequent arrests and seizures - just last January 10, three pushers between the ages of 25 and 29 were stopped - drug dealing has continued uninterrupted for over twenty years, demonstrating a resistance that seems to defy any judicial measure.
Law enforcement continues to monitor the area, but the phenomenon appears difficult to eradicate. The “drug dealing roundabout” remains a symbol of an illegal market that, despite the efforts of the authorities, continues to operate almost undisturbed, fueling concern and frustration among residents and local institutions.
