The decision was taken in agreement with all the federal components, as a sign of respect for the pontiff, a historic lover of football.
The condolences of Italian football
In an official statement, the FIGC expressed deep sorrow for the loss of the Holy Father, recalling his closeness to the world of sport. “Italian football shares with emotion the pain of hundreds of millions of people,” declared President Gabriele Gravina.
“Pope Francis was a great example of Christian charity and dignity in suffering. Passionate about football, he always showed attention to this sport, leaving an indelible mark with his humanity and spirituality. His closeness to the sick, the poor and the persecuted throughout the world will remain an eternal testimony”.
“With a ball of rags you can work miracles”: the Pope's passion for football
The FIGC recalled a famous phrase uttered by Jorgies Mario Bergoglio during a private audience with the Italian national team in 2019: “Even with a ball of rags you can work miracles”. Born in Argentina on December 17, 1936, Pope Francis has always shown his love for football, also inspiring joint initiatives between the Church and the world of football.
Among these, the “Giubileo-Pelota de Trapo” project, linked to the celebrations of the Jubilee of Sport, which were to culminate on 14 and 15 June with a special function in St. Peter's Square, presided over by the Pope himself.
A mourning that unites the faithful and fans
The postponement of the matches marks a moment of reflection for all of Italian football, which today joins the pain of the Church and the millions of faithful throughout the world. Pope Francis, with his humility and his universal message, will remain a beacon not only for the Catholic community, but also for sport, which has always seen in him an example of solidarity and hope. Football mourns a Pope who loved the game, but above all the humanity that lives it.
