An intricate network of insurance scams, orchestrated with fake road accidents, was revealed under the weight of a joint investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Offices of Rome and Santa Maria Capua Vetere, which involved 30 people, including three Justices of the Peace, lawyers, doctors and false witnesses. The searches, carried out by the Flying Squad and the Guardia di Finanza of Caserta, struck at the heart of a well-oiled system, built to collect millions of dollars in compensation to the detriment of insurance companies.
The scheme was as simple as it was sophisticated: invented accidents, carbon-copy dynamics, non-existent injuries and fake pedestrians hit on the crosswalk or riding bicycles, even tandems. No patrols on site, no real emergency, but everything was documented with precision to appear credible. Pulling the strings was a criminal association in which every role was well-defined: lawyers who took care of the legal direction, compliant doctors who signed reports and expert opinions, intermediaries who recruited extras willing to fake injuries in exchange for a few hundred euros.
The heart of the mechanism, however, also beat in the courtrooms. Some Justices of the Peace of the office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, now under investigation, would have guaranteed favorable sentences in exchange for money, closing the fraudulent circle with easy compensations and no excessive demands.
The material collected led to the issuing of large-scale search warrants. The part of the proceedings concerning the judges involved was transferred for jurisdiction to the Prosecutor's Office of Roma. The veil is thus lifted on a system that for years has manipulated the law and health care for easy profit, but is now faltering under the weight of evidence and indignation.
