Naples – Honorary citizenship for De Laurentiis has been postponed: it's unclear whether the decision not to approve the resolution granting honorary citizenship to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is a sign of fate or simply a political choice.
The fact is that someone had a hand in it, and the Forza Italia group's proposal, on the agenda of today's city council, had to be registered as lacking a quorum, with the fateful phrase 'the meeting is adjourned' by the president of the assembly, Enza Amato.
In the Maschio Angioino Palace chamber, only 17 councilors remained to discuss resolutions and policy when a quorum was requested. Thus, for De Laurentiis, honorary citizenship "is not appropriate," at least for now.
It's unclear how the President, who sits at the bottom of the Napoli Calcio rankings when it comes to the honor, took it. Honorary citizenship has been awarded in previous years, without a fight, first to Luciano Spalletti immediately after the Scudetto victory and then to Dries Mertens, the former Napoli player beloved by Neapolitans who left his heart and soul in the city of the siren.
Aurelio De Laurentiis has not been, at least for now, a prophet in his adopted homeland, and he will have to wait a little longer to see his name in the city's roll of honor.
Before the proposal for the Napoli president, the city council approved numerous resolutions for structural and maintenance interventions in strategic areas of the city. In the end, tired and exhausted, the city councilors quietly left the chamber as De Laurentiis' moment of glory approached.
The president, a resident of Rome, has family roots in the province of Naples, but is now Neapolitan by adoption. This adoption, for the time being, does not include honorary citizenship.
It seems to me a strange and somewhat political decision. I can't say if it's fate or politics, but the adjourned session doesn't even seem serious, there are few in the chamber and the legal number hasn't been verified, many councilors have left and so De Laurentiis remains without citizenship for now.
