Mergellina, hydrofoil crashes into rocks a few meters from the pier. Two boys miraculously saved. It is the second accident in the same place in two years.
On Saturday afternoon a hydrofoil crashed into the rocks of a pier in Mergellina. Two boys who were there managed to avoid being overwhelmed by the vehicle. One also suffered minor abrasions.
A tragedy narrowly avoided in the same spot where, two years earlier, there had been another accident. But it is clear that that episode has taught us nothing. Almost 24 months later, that pier is still there, although in a state of constant neglect and degradation, the scene of repeated accidents. It has never been fixed and, to this day, is almost never used.
"We ask ourselves why it should be left to itself and create a risk for navigation and for swimmers. What happened on Saturday should push us to reflect on the state of the piers. We ask the Port Authority to relaunch these structures, especially those of mergellina, entrusting them to managers who are able to maintain them with care, restoring their natural function". So says Francesco Emilio Borrelli, regional councilor of Europa Verde.
