Caserta, two days to donate blood: appeal of the sick. Event in Gricignano d'Aversa.
A two-day event dedicated to blood donation will be held in Gricignano d'Aversa, in the Caserta area, on Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4. It is organized by the Municipality and the Italian Foundation "Leonardo Giambrone" for the Healing of Thalassemia, which collects the cry for help of many patients forced to undergo blood or even plasma transfusions every couple of weeks, but who live in terror of the limited supplies.
Patients like Giuseppe Sardo, a 42-year-old thalassemic, who lives in a situation similar to that of many elderly people and children, treated in the department of the Cardarelli hospital in Naples where patients from Naples and its hinterland, and from the provinces of Caserta, Avellino and part of Salerno, flock.
The problem is that there aren't many donors and blood is in short supply. “We thalassemics - He says - and the most serious patients such as cancer patients, we see a bleak future as the blood emergency, year after year, becomes more and more serious. There is no television awareness like for Covid and vaccines. And politics often talks about useless things”.
So Sardo and other volunteers have been supporting the work of Angela Iacono, president of the Italian Foundation "Leonardo Giambrone", which is based in Castel Volturno; a work of awareness towards the institutions that aims to activate projects for blood collection, "but unfortunately the majority of the institutions - says Sardo - ignore us".
The 42-year-old says that last July 18th “Iacono managed to organize a blood drive during a meeting of the Campania Regional Council, and only 18 people donated.”
The Foundation is also trying to find companies that will encourage their employees to donate blood in exchange for free blood tests. Sardo therefore launches an appeal. “For us,” he explains, “transfusion therapy is a lifesaver, but unfortunately it is not produced in a factory but only thanks to the big heart and conscience of those who donate.”
