Article Key Points
It is the fourth of this year. "It is always difficult and painful to comment but, for those who have responsibilities of union representation, it is above all a new and necessary opportunity to question the motivations and to rekindle attention on the working conditions of prison staff increasingly marked by exhausting shifts also due to the lack of staff and stress caused by the continuous attacks by inmates".
This is stated by the general secretary of the S.PP., Aldo Di Giacomo, for whom it is essential to investigate the reasons and causes by extending the investigation to all the Corps of men and women in uniform. According to the Observatory of Suicides in Uniform, in these first nine months of the year there have already been 51 suicides.
Last year there were 57 suicides but in 2020 there were 51 and in 2019 there were 69
Last year there were 57 suicides, in 2020 there were six fewer and the year before as many as 69. Significant, as a good starting point, is the opinion of those who edited this study: "The pathological factors can be traced back to some serious and anachronistic distortions present in the military and police forces: transfers of headquarters, characteristic judgments, disciplinary sanctions and merits".
Therefore our concern cannot but grow especially for some factors among which the high average age, reduced staff, grueling shifts, sanctions and disciplinary measures. The number of "suicides in uniform" has an alarming trend since suicides among the personnel of the armed forces and security are increasing.
“This year we are already at 51: ten Carabinieri, including four Forest Rangers, six Finance Police, three Army soldiers, four Penitentiary Police officers (plus one suicide attempt); eighteen members of the State Police, including one recently retired (+3 suicide attempts), five Local Police officers, two security guards, two firefighters and one Air Force soldier.
The “cold numbers” – adds Di Giacomo – do not give a precise idea of the human drama experienced by those who come to the decision to take their own life. What can and must be done and we ask the Parliament that is about to take office as we will ask the new Government – is to prepare measures and actions, also in the field of social-health and psychological assistance, to make the work of men and women in uniform first of all safer and less stressful.
