The metropolitan city of Milan is seventh for reports of sexual violence, second for robberies in public streets, third for criminal associations. The trend of reports detected by the police forces during 2021 is also influenced by tourist flows in the second ranked province, Rimini, where - here too - thefts are the most reported type of crime, as in Milan.
The other large cities follow in terms of crime density: among the top ten, in addition to Milan, there are also Turin (3), Bologna (4), Rome (5), Florence (7) and Naples (10). The geography of crimes in 2021 confirms a series of now consolidated scenarios: Milan is the capital of thefts in general, ahead of Rimini and Rome; Barletta is at the top of the ranking for car thefts; Naples is first for snatching and motorcycle thefts, but also for contraband.
Naples is also first for smuggling
And again: Gorizia tops the list of scams and computer frauds, Vibo Valentia first for threats. However, a series of new developments emerge, such as the primacy of La Spezia in drug-related crimes - including dealing - and that of Matera in terms of fire reports. Enna replaces Caltanissetta at the top of the list of voluntary homicides - and is followed by Aosta - while Biella and Ragusa wear the black jersey for, respectively, extortion and usury.
The map of crimes committed and reported, provided again this year by the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior, confirms the downward trend in crimes: comparing the 2021 data with those of 2019, before the pandemic, there is a general decrease in the quantity of crimes.
And the trend is confirmed in all metropolitan areas: Milan, for example, recorded a -11,8%, while Rome is at -6,8%; Florence, Venice and Bologna are the large cities with the most marked decline, equal to -24,6%, -17,8% and -15,3 percent.
However, some areas are going against the grain: while almost all provinces are showing a general decline in reported crimes compared to the pre-Covid period, there are about ten that are showing signs of alarm. Piacenza and Isernia, for example, both recorded an increase in crime in 2021 compared to 2019. In Piacenza and its province, reported crimes rose by 11,7%, settling at just under 10 reports.
Among the negative records of the Emilian province, the ones for home robberies and road homicides stand out (2). But the territory is also among the worst in Italy for sexual violence and sexual violence against minors under 14 (11).
Isernia, on the other hand, which is in the middle (49) of the general ranking of reported crimes in relation to the population, in 2021 recorded crimes that increased by 8,8% compared to 2019. Just like Piacenza, the Molise province is burdened by road homicides, to which are added criminal associations and arson (2).
