'Amedeo Maiuri' Award to the director of the Mann, Giulierini. The presentation ceremony will be in Pompeii on Monday.
Next Monday, November 21, at 11:XNUMX a.m., in the City Council Hall of Palazzo de Fusco, Pompeii, the names of the winners of the fourth edition of the International 'Amedeo Maiuri' Award will be announced, which this year is enriched with two new sections: 'archaeological films' and 'discovery', in addition to that of 'career recognition' as an archaeologist.
The award is promoted by the Municipality of Pompeii, which has sought to institutionalize the event to support and enhance it year after year. For the fourth edition, the figure chosen by the jury chaired by the archaeologist, Professor Umberto Pappalardo, has fallen on Professor Paolo Giulierini, archaeologist, director of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. For the other two sections, the commission is still busy choosing the winners, who will be announced during the meeting at Palazzo de Fusco.
The award is promoted by the Municipality of Pompeii, which has intended to institutionalize the event to support and enhance it year after year. The event has been scientifically curated since the first edition by archaeologists Umberto Pappalardo and Antonio De Simone, who have chosen among illustrious scholars names of absolute prestige.
And it could not be otherwise because Amedio Maiuri was the Italian archaeologist of 'clear world fame' who in about forty years, from 1923 to 1961, leading the Superintendence of Antiquities of Campania, with competences also over part of Lazio, Molise and Basilicata, gave new impetus to the archaeological excavations of the Vesuvian area bringing to light, among other cities and sites, the majority of Herculaneum and Pompeii currently visible. In the first edition, in 2016, the award went to Prof. Mario Torelli, an undisputed figure in the archaeological academic world; in the second edition, 2018, the choice fell on Prof. M'hamed Hassine Fantar, emeritus Tunisian scholar; in the third edition, 2021, Prof. Masanori Aoyagi, a great figure of Japanese culture and already honorary citizen of Pompeii, was chosen. The Film Festival section is coordinated by director Andrea Valentino.
The press conference, during which all aspects of the award will be illustrated and the program of the three days over which the event will unfold will be specified, will feature Carmine Lo Sapio, mayor of Pompeii; Antonio De Simone, member of the scientific committee of the 'Award'; Andreina Esposito, deputy mayor and councilor with UNESCO delegation, among others; Michele Troianiello, councilor for Cultural Heritage; Carlo Manfredi, journalist and creator of the 'Award' format.
