The month of January opens the new year with a confirmation of the positive trend of decrease in waste fires in the Land of Fires: there were only 32 arson events (29 in the province of Naples and 3 in that of Caserta).
This figure is even lower than that of the previous months of November and December 2022 (when 55 and 44 waste fires were recorded, respectively). The comparison with the month of January last year (2022) is even clearer, when waste fires were double: 64 (57 in the municipalities of Naples and 7 in Caserta).
The values for the northern coastal strip are zero, repeatedly confirming the seasonality of the phenomenon, which is revealed to be directly connected to the number of people living in summer settlements along the coast (the number of fires in urban areas where there are structural deficiencies in the collection system is directly proportional to the number of residents).
No arson events on waste at Roma camps in January. The data on waste abandonment is also decreasing (in the table: “new dumping sites”); this is very comforting, considering that abandonment is the primary cause of fires. We will see, in the coming months, whether this decrease will be confirmed and become a trend data.
