Italy didn't make it. Alice Rohrwacher, nominated for an Oscar with the short film "Le pupille" and Aldo Signoretti in the category "Best Makeup and Hairstyling", failed to take home the famous statuette. As predicted, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is the best film of the year, the film directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert that tells the story of Evelyn Wang, a Chinese immigrant in her fifties, currently engaged in a boring and condescending class who finds herself in a broom closet with a version of her husband from an alternate universe.
It is the most awarded film of the 95th edition of the awards, with 7 statuettes won out of a total of 11 nominations, and 6 in the main categories. It had never happened before in the history of the Academy Awards. In addition to best film, the feature film won the awards for best director with the two Daniels, best leading actress with Michelle Yeoh, best original screenplay, best supporting actor with Ke Huy Quan, best supporting actress with the legendary Jamie Lee Curtis, best editing.
"I dedicate this award to my husband, to our daughters, to my sister, to all those who supported my genre films, we all won this OSCAR. And to my mother and my father, both of whom were nominated for different categories.“, said Jamie Lee Curtis from the stage of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The award for best animated film went to Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro, who beat the other nominees Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Puss in Boots 2, The Last Wish, Sea Monster and Red. The award for best documentary went to Navalny, on stage the wife of the Russian opposition leader, who called Putin's war against Ukraine unjust, recalled her husband's commitment to the defense of freedom and democracy. The shortlist also included All That Breathes, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Fire of Love and A House Made of Splinters. An Irish Goodbye, triumphed as best short film in the shortlist composed of Ivalu, Le Pupille (directed by the Italian Alba Rorhwacher), Night Ride and The Red Suitcase.
The Whale won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, while Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won Best Costume Design. The award for Best Foreign Language Film was won by “All Quiet on the Western Front” by German director Edward Berger. The shortlist also included Argentina, 1985 (Argentina), Close (Belgium), EO (Poland) and The Quiet Girl (Ireland).
The 95th Academy Awards were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who returned to host the famous event for the third time after the 2017 and 2018 editions. The long ceremony followed the tradition consolidated in these 100 years of history, with some novelties, starting from the most famous red carpet in the world which this year changed color: champagne. There was a great deployment of forces, both outside and inside the Academy, men and women of security and organization committed to guarantee the perfect progress of the ceremony, from the parade of VIPs and world-class stars of the big screen, to the delivery of the famous statuettes.
