The Court of Cassation has ordered the immediate release from prison of Giovanni Izzo, a Campanian entrepreneur involved in the maxi-operation Olimpo of the Catanzaro District Directorate which last January “hit” a large criminal organization operating between Parma, Malta, Romania and Ricadi (Vibo Valentia), believed to be a sorting and laundering center for stolen vehicles.
The investigation involves 78 people who are being investigated and charged by investigators with the crimes of criminal association, money laundering, receiving stolen goods, violation of tax laws and other crimes: 56 have been arrested and the police have seized assets worth approximately 250 million euros in the tourism-hotel sector of Vibo Valentia.
Among those arrested is also the entrepreneur of Saint Agatha of the Goths, accused of being part of the criminal association operating since 2018 and according to the DDA still operational. The decision of the judges of legitimacy to release Izzo came late yesterday evening: the sixth criminal section of the Supreme Court accepted the appeal of the lawyer Giusida Sanseverino of the Benevento Bar.
The Attorney General instead declared the appeal inadmissible. The Capitoline judges invalidated two provisions: the order of the Review Court of Catanzaro and also the order of precautionary custody adopted by the District Judge, ordering the immediate release of Izzo, owner of a company operating in the transport and waste storage sector.
The Supreme Court has not deemed a new trial before the Calabrian judges unnecessary. The Campanian entrepreneur is: last January he was arrested in the maxi investigation of the Catanzaro District Anti-Mafia Directorate, called Operation Olimpo. It is not excluded that the entrepreneur will now submit a request for compensation for wrongful detention.
