Milan Racz, a 23-year-old Slovakian, was sentenced to 35 years for voluntary homicide. The court in Reggio Emilia found him guilty of killing 51-year-old Aniello Iazzetta, originally from Afragola in summer 2021.
The victim's body was found on June 16, in her home on Via Stalingrado in Reggio Emilia – where she lived with the same alleged murderer to whom she had rented a room – but according to the investigation, her death dated back to four days earlier.
Iazzetta was found with his skull split in two and investigators believe the defendant killed him with his bare hands after attacking him in the bathroom, throwing him by the head against the bidet.
Racz was arrested by the Carabinieri a few hours after the discovery of the body while he was about to embark from the port of La Spezia to escape with his girlfriend and has been in prison since then.
The prosecution, at the end of the prosecution's closing speech this morning by prosecutor Valentina Salvi, had requested life imprisonment. But the court of assizes (presided by judge Cristina Beretti, with Michela Caputo and the popular jury on its side), after meeting in the council chamber, issued a sentence of 23 years in prison this afternoon, excluding the contested aggravating circumstances.
