Double appointment with thanks to the collaboration between Salerno Literature and Giffoni Film Festival.
The Belgian director and screenwriter, who with his brother Jean-Pierre has received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival twice (Rosetta and L'enfant-A Love Story), the André Cavens Award four times and, in 2020, the Prix Lumière, the highest recognition in cinema, will be in Salerno on Friday 23 June. At 11 am, the San Demetrio cinema theatre will host a screening of their latest film Tori and Lokita. The story of two African immigrants, eleven-year-old Tori and sixteen-year-old Lokita, who live by their wits in a Belgian city, passing themselves off as brother and sister, was awarded at the 75th Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated for the 2023 Magritte Award.
Girls and boys from Salerno Letteratura and the Giffoni community will discuss it with the director, with the creative director of Giffoni Luca Apolito and with Stefania Ricciardi, translator and editor of his latest book Addosso alle immagini (Il Saggiatore). The Dardenne brothers will then be awarded the Giffoni Award for their vision, civil commitment and ability to tell the story of society and its continuous evolutions with a special grace and a stylistic figure based on the essential.

At 20.30:XNUMX pm, in the atrium of the Duomo, Luc Dardenne will talk with journalist Francesca Mannocchi and Stefania Ricciardi. A real journey into the cinema of the Dardenne brothers, who over the years have created some of the most memorable films on the world scene. The book is a container of thoughts, each of which is a fragment in the construction of an imaginary of rare clarity and complexity. A work that reveals to us what happens in the mind of a director before the eye rests on the camera.
“There is something that makes the cinema of Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne immediately recognizable. But its distinctive trait cannot be defined: there is no analogue, for the Dardennes, of the adjectives 'Felliniesque', 'Lynchian' or even 'Kafkaesque'. We believe it is fortunate, this irreducibility to common sense. The key is perhaps in a phrase by Lichtenberg, quoted by Luc in these working notes: «Many unspeakable things would be of very little value if they could be said». This is why the unsaid plays a decisive role in the films of the Dardennes, in which one always has the alienating sensation of having missed something – says Gennaro Carillo, co-artistic director with Paolo Di Paolo of Salerno Letteratura – The truth is in the image, writes Luc, but the image does not coincide with the thing represented.
