The red light has come on regarding the pollution levels of the Sarno river: from Scafati to Castellammare di Stabia (Rovigliano area) the situation is alarming.
In the municipality of Stabia, a huge brown patch has formed in the sea that can be seen from a distance. The environmental police suspect that behind this presence of dirty water that reaches the mouth of the Sarno there is the hand of man.
In fact, there are numerous companies that, taking advantage of the heavy rains of the last few days, are illegally dumping into the river a quantity of material that should pass through the purification plants.
A Scafati, instead, the waters of the Rio Sguazzatoio were dyed brown as also documented and reported by some citizens who turned to the deputy of the Green-Left alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli:
“This is the Rio Sguazzatoio that flows into the Alveo Nocerino Sarnese which in turn joins the Sarno a few meters from the Carabinieri Barracks in via Oberdan. It is a story that repeats itself every year in this period at the same time as the increased activity of the canning industries and soon, like every year, the nauseating stench will begin.”
“The Sarno River has been in the news for years due to its pollution, miasmas and the diseases it causes to the population. Yet everything continues to proceed in the same direction. The Campania Region is working on a project that aims to decontaminate the river by 2025.
But the objective seems, today, to be far away if the logic of profit and savings takes precedence over that of the defense of nature and if we do not take action to combat, in facts and no longer in words, those dishonest and criminal companies that dump sewage and waste from work in water and illegally discharge houses", declares Borrelli.
"We have alerted the regional department and the Ministry of the Environment to intensify interventions. In the meantime, we have asked the Environmental Police and Arpac to carry out checks and blanket checks in Castellammare, Scafati and all the municipalities where the presence of canning industries is highest".
