An inmate set fire to a mattress in protest in the prison carinola (Caserta), causing the poisoning of three prison officers. The incident occurred late yesterday morning, and was made public today by the prison police union Uspp, which in a note signed by the Campania secretary Ciro Auricchio, explains that "the surprising thing is the motivation: in fact, the gesture would seem to be due to a protest because the prisoner, dissatisfied with the taste of the water he bought, would have demanded an immediate change with another package of the same type and in revenge he lit the mattress.
By now, episodes of madness are the order of the day in prisons. The climate of impunity that has spread and of delegitimization of the actions of the police has in fact handed over the prisons to the prisoners. Prisoners who take summary justice into their own hands, with absurd demands such as requests for therapy and health services of their liking, who refuse to enter their cells, who offend and threaten prison workers without limits.
When will politics realize that the situation is unmanageable and that prisons from re-education have become centers of widespread illegality and areas where crime is easily managed? We need immediately - adds Auricchio - a state of emergency in prisons, even if the limited prison police personnel still manage to maintain order and internal security".
