“Yet another demonstration of the extraordinary value of the men of the Penitentiary Police Department of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere District Prison who demonstrate that they are able to make up for the widespread inefficiencies of the penitentiary administration with their commitment and tireless personal sacrifice”.
This is the comment of Si.NAPPe through the voice of the Deputy General Secretary Luigi Vargas and the Regional Secretary Pasquale Gallo.
They then add: "Last night a 50-year-old Italian prisoner held in the Sammaritan prison attempted to hang himself with a rudimentary rope made from bedsheets. Only the timely intervention of a prison police officer prevented the worst, saving the man's life."
"And so - continue Vargas and Gallo - it was once again the Penitentiary Police who patched things up, preventing the sad bulletin of deaths in prison from being updated. And this despite the fact that in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, there is a clear staffing deficit that the Administration is unable to stem".
“Si.NAPPe is close to the Agents who every day in the detention sections find themselves facing the most unpredictable situations, with the few means available, too often even at risk of their own safety.
We need to intervene in a concrete way with human, economic and organizational resources in order to remedy the staff shortages to guarantee safety within the Sammaritan Institute. We have been asking for reinforcements for years from an Administration that up to this point has proved deaf to our cries of alarm.
We ask for adequate staffing for the Penitentiary Police, rather than resorting to the merger of several service positions under the control of a single Agent, weakening security within prisons and raising the level of psychophysical stress of workers.
It is right that the prison management propose a fair recognition to the officers who intervened promptly and skillfully in saving a human life.” conclude Luigi Vargas and Pasquale Gallo of Si.NAPPe.
