The soccer field named after Ciro Colonna, an innocent victim of the Camorra, in the neighborhood Ponticelli of Naples, was reopened thanks to the initiative of the Cassa Edile di Napoli, led by Rudy Girardi, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the joint body.
The regeneration of the area, which also includes a playground, was donated to the Municipality of Naples with the aim of counteracting degradation in some areas and promoting the active participation of productive forces in the territory.
Rudy Girardi stated: “We decided to donate the regeneration of the soccer field and the playground to the Municipality of Naples to make a contribution, to take an active part in fighting the degradation of some territories. A signal must be given to those who have been left behind: we, the productive forces, in synergy with all the institutions and actors of the territory, believe in it and seeing children playing today is an encouraging sign of vitality in the neighborhood.”
The vice president of Cassa Edile, Giuseppe Mele, emphasized that, although it is a small initiative, it represents the commitment of the construction unions for the territory. The soccer field and the playground not only testify to urban regeneration, but also try to contribute to keeping alive the hope and memory of Ciro.
Don Luigi Ciotti, founder of Libera, participated in the reopening and stated: “The best way to remember is to do something concrete, not celebrations for their own sake. We need to do things, give opportunities and points of reference, listen to these kids and above all give them answers. This is where life is trained.”
Mary Colonna, Ciro's sister, who attended the event with her father Enrico, shared the symbolic meaning of the camp and expressed her hope that it will become a safe place for the neighborhood's children. The appeal was also launched by the deputy mayor of Naples, Laura Lieto, so that the camp becomes a place of care and custody open to all.
The inauguration was attended by numerous personalities, including the Archbishop of Naples, Monsignor Domenico Battaglia, the commander of the Campania Carabinieri Legion, Antonio Jannece, the provincial commander of the Carabinieri, Enrico Scandone, and the comedian Ciro Giustiniani. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of Naples, actively involved the ecclesiastical community and the territory, aiming to improve social and youth gathering spaces, especially in the suburbs.
