The launch of the first smart glass in Torre del Greco

The glass, made of washable and reusable polypropylene, can be purchased for a deposit of one euro, which is returned upon return. The glass is branded with the logo of the Christmas village di Greek's tower, where it was previewed in the presence of the Mayor Luigi Mennella and the councilor for ecological transition Laura Vitiello.

“The idea is to gradually replace single-use plastic cups, which are thrown away after just the first use, with reusable cups”, explain the promoters of the project, Michele Intoccia and Andrea Speranza.

“In practice, the glass can be kept by the customer or used on other evenings during the entire duration of the initiative, or returned at any time. In this specific case at all the stands present in the municipal villa, but in the future at all the city's commercial activities that may join the initiative”.

“This is an initiative that is linked to the increasingly pressing need to reduce waste production”, says Mayor Mennella. “We like that ideas of this type come from young people, demonstrating the sensitivity towards environmental issues that characterizes the younger generations”.

“One of the objectives strongly desired and requested by the Department of Ecological Transition”, underlines the councilor Vitiello, “it was, as far as the Christmas Village was concerned, a food area from which plastic was banned.

Italy is in third place in the world ranking for plastic use and about 33% of marine waste is made up of plastic. Hence the project to sensitize citizens to greater protection and awareness of environmental issues and to give life, thanks to the precious collaboration of the Eco Culturale association, to the intelligent glass”.

The smart glass is an innovative initiative that has the potential to significantly reduce single-use plastic pollution. If the project were to be replicated in other Italian cities, it could have a significant impact on environmental protection.
