NAPLES – The trial of six people accused of usury against a local businessman began this morning before the preliminary hearing judge of the 42nd section of the Court of Naples. soccavo.
The victim, Salvatore Fiore, at the time of the events a representative of the local Democratic Party, had found himself in serious economic difficulty due to the pandemic and, unable to access traditional credit, had turned to the defendants to obtain loans.
Fiore reported having received sums between 6 and 71 euros, but having had to return around 100 due to the usurious interest rates applied.
Five of the defendants – Nicola Siano, 47; Gennaro Di Napoli, 54; Giovanni Minopoli, 47; Carlo Capezzuto, 74; and Francesco Di Donato, 51 – have chosen the abbreviated trial and their sentencing is scheduled for June 27. The sixth defendant, Giuseppe Barretta, 49, has instead opted for the ordinary trial.
Fiore, defended by the lawyer Alessandro Motta, has joined the trial as a civil party. The investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Operational Nucleus of the Bagnoli Company, led to the issuing of six precautionary measures last December.
