This year, going on vacation will cost between 15% and 20% more than in 2023. This is revealed by data from Assoutenti and the Centro di Formazione e Ricerca sui Consumo (CRC), which conducted a joint survey on tourism prices. For a family with two children choosing to spend a week's vacation in an Italian seaside resort, the costs vary significantly.
Booking a three-star accommodation today for the period from 10 to 17 August, the costs range from a minimum of 872 euros in Bibione to a maximum of 3.500 euros in Porto Cervo. Among other locations, Baja Sardinia requires almost 2.600 euros, Amalfi around 2.200 euros, and Marina di Pietrasanta over 2.000 euros. Rapallo (909 euros) and Grado (967 euros) are cheaper.
Comparing the rates for the month of August available today on specialized sites with those of June 2023, an average increase of 19,6% emerges. Sardinia shows the most significant percentage increases, followed by Senigallia, Milano Marittima and Anzio. Transport also records significant increases.
A family with two children traveling by ferry with a car in tow, spending 1.274 euros for the Genoa-Porto Torres route (+1,8% on 2023), 1.094 euros for the Livorno-Olbia route (+6,2%), 669 euros for the Naples-Palermo route (+7,2%) and 823 euros for the Civitavecchia-Porto Torres route (+10,2%). Fares for the Civitavecchia-Olbia route are down 7,4%. Overall, average increases for ferries are 6,3%.
The phenomenon of high flight prices affects both domestic and foreign routes. A return flight for a family with two children for the period from 10 to 17 August costs 972 euros today for the Milan-Brindisi route (+15%), 924 euros from Rome to Olbia (+15,5%), 770 euros from Milan to Cagliari (+5,6%) and 686 euros from Rome to Cagliari (+19,7%). For international routes, 1.932 euros are spent from Rome to the Maldives (+44,2%), 1.890 euros from Rome to Phuket (+21,6%), and 1.842 euros from Rome to Zanzibar (+8,5%).
From 2020 to today, beach resorts have constantly increased the rates for renting umbrellas and sunbeds. Today, the average cost for renting an umbrella and two sunbeds varies between 30 and 35 euros per day, with peaks of 90 euros in Salento and over 120 euros in some locations in Sardinia. The national average increases are 5% compared to 2023. Even in restaurants in holiday resorts, there is an increase of 3,5%.
Furio Truzzi, president of the scientific committee of the Training and Research Centre on Consumption, warns: Considering all expenditure items, going on holiday this year will cost an average of 15% to 20% more than in 2023. Rates appear to be spiraling out of control, partly as a result of the resurgence of tourism and the record influx of foreigners into Italy. The risk is that many families will forgo summer holidays or reduce the number of nights away from home to keep costs down.
Gabriele Melluso, president of Assoutenti, invites the government to intervene: We propose studying measures to control the prices of tourism services, allowing all families to go on vacation. Measures similar to the anti-inflation basket could be adopted, identifying a series of tourist services at controlled prices in major holiday destinations.
