Naples between Music and Tradition: Discover the Patronal Festivals
“Vedi Napoli e poi torni” is a project promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples. The initiative invites tourists and citizens to explore the importance of religious festivals in Neapolitan culture and tradition. Starting on June 1, the Patronal Festivals offer a series of celebrations full of music and theater events.
Concert of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
On August 15, at 20:30 pm, in the Royal Pontifical Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, the Suaviternova Choir, directed by Maestro Pietro Biancardi, will celebrate the Madonna Assunta with a concert of sacred music. Admission to the event is free until all seats are taken. The musical program includes performances of classical pieces such as Ave Maria by C. Saint-Saëns, G. Caccini, F. Schubert, C. Gounod, P. Mascagni, B. Somma, D. Andreo, J. Arcadelt, as well as compositions by WA Mozart and C. Franck.
Historical and Cultural Place
The Royal Pontifical Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, considered one of the most important architectures of the viceroyal period, is listed as the national church of Spain. It houses numerous sepulchral monuments, the most significant of which is the tomb of Don Pedro de Toledo. Among the treasures of the Basilica are the tomb of Ferdinand Maiorca and that of his wife Porzia Coniglia, both works by Michelangelo Naccherino.

Inside the Basilica, visitors can admire masterpieces of Neapolitan art from the 15th and XNUMXth centuries, including the Crucifixion, Saint James the Apostle, the Deposition by Giovanni Bernardo Lama, and numerous paintings by artists such as Marco Pino, Giovanni Demio, Giorgio Vasari, Giovanni Angelo Criscuolo, Andrea Vaccaro and Luca Giordano. Also of particular note are works from the XNUMXth century such as Saint James Led to Martyrdom by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro and the Madonna della Vittoria by Pietro Bardellino.
