Another violent attack has rocked the Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi prison.
Yesterday evening, an inmate, already known for previous episodes of violence, hit a prison police inspector in the head who had refused his request to make an unauthorized phone call.
The episode, reported by the Sappe union, has caused deep concern among prison workers. Despite repeated attacks, the prisoner in question continues to be detained in the same facility, as do other individuals who have been the protagonists of similar episodes.
Tiziana Guacci, secretary for the Campania region of the SAPPE, emphasized that the situation inside the prison is now unsustainable. "The Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi prison used to be a place of excellence, now it's a place where violence reigns supreme," Guacci stated.
“Agents work in increasingly difficult conditions, subjected to constant stress and at real risk to their safety.”
The union is calling for urgent intervention by the institutions to guarantee the safety of prison officers and restore order within the facility. Among the requests of Sappe are:
Immediate transfer of violent inmates : It is essential to remove those who repeatedly attack from prisons to prevent them from endangering the lives of other inmates and staff.
Increased Staffing: Prison staffing needs to be strengthened to ensure adequate control over the prison population.
Improving working conditions: Prison officers have the right to work in a safe and healthy environment, with adequate resources and tools to carry out their duties.
Last night's attack is just the latest episode in a series of events that demonstrate how the situation inside Italian prisons is increasingly critical. A change of direction is needed, with more effective policies and greater investments in the penitentiary sector.
