Naples. “The conditions are being created in Campania to call into question primary care for the citizens of Campania due to the retirement of general practitioners and the impossibility of filling the missing positions in the areas lacking doctors in our region due to the fact that we are unable to fill 222 vacant primary care positions in the elective cycle for the year 2024”.
This is the complaint of Giovanni Senese, Regional Secretary of the SMI Campania, commenting on the data of the latest report referring to 2024 for the assignment of vacant primary care positions in the elective cycle, contained in the Management Decree no. 41 of a few days ago of the General Directorate for health protection and coordination of the regional health system of Campania.
“Retirements are not covered by young doctors because the training system, that of scholarships, does not ensure generational turnover in the medical profession within certain timeframes.
For these reasons, the SMI, at a national level, strongly calls for the establishment of a specialization school for general practitioners to overcome the dramatic shortage of new family doctors.
It is necessary that the public sector, Government and Region, invest in proximity medicine with policies that encourage the entry of young professionals into the field of general medicine.
This gloomy picture was reached with policies of cuts to healthcare, pursued for more than ten years, which have imposed a cap on the hiring of medical and healthcare personnel.
In Campania, a real turning point is needed to stop the disappearance of proximity medicine. For these reasons, we ask that the regional permanent committee of art. ex 24 of the National Collective Agreement of general medicine be urgently convened to identify possible measures and incentives of regional competence to support the medical profession, also threatened by the effects of Differentiated Autonomy. It is necessary to guarantee medical assistance to all citizens of Campania and cover the areas lacking doctors”, concludes Senese.
