Montecatini Terme. Police at the Montecatini Terme police station arrested two twenty-year-old Italian men from Naples on charges of attempted aggravated fraud against an elderly woman living in the Pistoia area. The incident occurred on July 3rd. One of the men was taken to prison, while the other was placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
According to investigators, the scam began with a phone call: a man, pretending to be an acquaintance of the victim's son, communicated that the latter was under arrest for causing a car accident in which a woman had been seriously injured. The interlocutor then asked for money to "resolve the situation".
Shortly after, an accomplice showed up at the old woman's house to collect the alleged payment. In the meantime, a second individual joined the first, insisting on obtaining money or valuables, even going so far as to ask for the keys to the safe. However, the intervention of the victim's daughter-in-law scared off the criminals.
Thanks to timely reports and investigations, the police were able to track down the vehicle used by the scammers and identify them during a check that took place in the late afternoon in Arezzo. Investigations continue to trace other possible accomplices involved in the affair.
