A video released by the Carabinieri shows the last moments of life of Chamila Wijesuriya, the 50-year-old barmaid of Sri Lankan origin found lifeless on the afternoon of Sunday 11 May in Parco Nord, in Sesto San Giovanni.
Next to her, in those images, there is Emanuel De Maria, the woman's colleague, who then took his own life a few hours after the murder, throwing himself into the void from the terraces of Milan Cathedral.
Chamila had been missing since May 10, but it was only in the last few hours that the tragic truth emerged. De Maria, 35, a former prisoner with permission to work outside, was serving a sentence for a murder that occurred in 2016.
He worked at the Berna hotel, the same one where on Saturday morning he stabbed another colleague, Hani Nasr, who managed to save himself. Then he escaped, and finally committed suicide, carried out like a normal tourist, climbing onto the terrace of the Duomo with a regular ticket.
According to the public prosecutor Francesco De Tommasi, who is coordinating the investigation, it would be a premeditated murder and attempted murder. Autopsies have been ordered to clarify the causes of death and determine whether De Maria had taken drugs.
Meanwhile, the Carabinieri and Police investigations are reconstructing his movements in the previous 48 hours, to understand if someone hosted him, perhaps unknowingly, during his escape.
He called his mother and sister-in-law saying: “I screwed up”
In the meantime, disturbing details emerge. De Maria, with the victim's phone, called the mother and sister-in-law to ask for forgiveness, then threw the cell phone in a trash can in via Bignami. Thelawyer of the 35 year old, Daniele TropeaSaid: “His position had been carefully evaluated by the Bollate prison and the Surveillance magistrate. No one could have imagined such an epilogue”.
Hani Nasr, the surviving colleague, told investigators that he warned Chamila to end the relationship, fearing for her safety. A fear that, unfortunately, turned out to be well-founded.
