It ended badly for a repeat poacher who had transformed a farmland in Pompeii into an illegal capture camp for protected birds. During a joint raid, the Metropolitan Police of Naples, coordinated by Commander Lucia Rea, together with volunteer guards and experts from LIPU, seized a real and fully functional bird trapping facility: nine cage traps positioned on poles, all baited, with live goldfinches used as decoys next to them.
The inspection led to the discovery of a small hell for avifauna. In indecent hygienic conditions, between dirt and bad smell, 24 specimens were found illegally detained: goldfinches, siskins, hawfinches, a robin, starlings and song thrushes, all belonging to particularly protected species. With them, also a bird trapping net and 24 other snap traps ready for use.
The person responsible for the land, already known for similar precedents, has been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata for a long list of crimes: fowling, capture and detention of protected species, animal abuse, aggravated hunting theft. A serious accusation, which falls like a final cage on an illegal activity to the detriment of wild fauna, an unavailable asset of the State.
