Catania– A joint operation between Naples and Catania has dealt a heavy blow to drug trafficking, with the Guardia di Finanza of the Catania Provincial Command seizing 60 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated retail value of over 13 million euros.
The operation led to the arrest of a Neapolitan courier, intercepted while transporting the large load on board an articulated lorry.
The operation is part of the intensification of services to combat illicit trafficking, aimed at the points of greatest commercial transit in the Etna capital. The military personnel of the Catania Emergency Services Company, on patrol 117 and supported by a canine unit, stopped a lorry in the industrial area of Catania. The vehicle was driven by a thirty-year-old originally from Campania.
The nervous reaction and the discovery of the load
Stopped for a routine check, the driver's nervous and unequivocal reaction aroused the suspicions of the Guardia di Finanza, who decided to proceed with a more thorough search of the man and the vehicle.
Inside the semi-trailer, cleverly hidden between the bottom and the platforms of the transported goods, two dark bags containing numerous blocks of narcotic substance were found. A narcotest quickly confirmed the suspicions: it was pure cocaine. Not only that, in the glove compartment of the tractor, a gram of hashish and 800 euros in cash were also found.
In light of the overwhelming evidence, the Etna Green Berets immediately proceeded to seize the narcotic substance – presumably intended to supply the drug dealing areas of the province of Catania – the vehicle used for transportation and the money. The driver was arrested in flagrante delicto for possession and transportation of narcotic substances.
The Public Prosecutor on duty at the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Catania has ordered the transfer of the arrested person to the Piazza Lanza prison.
The investigations, however, do not stop here. Investigators are now working to trace the suppliers and final buyers of this large quantity of drugs.
Investigations to trace suppliers and final buyers
To this end, in-depth analysis of the truck's GPS is underway to reconstruct the route taken and the starting point of the load. At the same time, the courier's cell phone is being examined: it is hoped to find messages and indications useful for dismantling the entire criminal network behind the cocaine trafficking and in particular the Camorra and Etna mafia clans involved.

The operation to capture the courier was very important, but I wonder if they will really be able to stop drug trafficking. The situation seems complicated and problems continue to be present in our society.
