Un a large fire broke out in the late morning around 12.30 today, Friday 18 July 2025, on Vesuvius, in the area between Torre del Greco and Trecase, near via Fossa della Monaca and close to via Montagnelle.
The flames, fanned by the wind, spread rapidly, burning brushwood, trees, and shrubs, threatening nearby homes and roads. The affected municipalities immediately alerted emergency services.
The fire department responded to the scene with 11 teams, supported by a regional helicopter, a Canadair, and an Erikson. Civil Protection volunteers are also present, monitoring the residential areas at risk. The area has been cordoned off to prevent access and ensure safety.
Firefighting operations are still ongoing, while a thick column of smoke, visible for kilometers, has risen into the sky. Some volunteers, interviewed on site by our correspondents, expressed concern about the high-risk conditions in some areas, where weather conditions could spark new fires.
The mayor of Trecase Raffaele De Luca released a statement to update citizens on the situation: “The fire that broke out this morning on the border between Trecase and Torre del Greco is being extinguished. Eleven firefighting and cleanup teams are working on the scene, along with air support.".
The fire brings to mind the serious episodes that devastated the vegetation of Vesuvius years ago, causing extensive damage. Today was marked by numerous fires in the province of Naples, keeping firefighters busy on multiple fronts.
