An image of the scooter rodeo in Piazza Mercato
In the heart of Naples' historic center, Piazza Mercato is once again the focus of residents' complaints. During the night, dozens of scooters speed through the pedestrian area, engaging in veritable gymkhanas of wheelies and dangerous maneuvers, often without helmets.
The scenes, documented in videos and photographs, show groups of young people darting just a few meters from passers-by, accompanying their antics with loud noises that continue for hours.
According to residents, this is a phenomenon that has been going on for years and has not stopped even after the establishment of a permanent Army garrison, ordered by the Prefecture in December 2024.
Reports continue to arrive regularly, demonstrating a situation perceived as unresolved and a source of concern for the safety and livability of the area.
Reviving the issue is MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who reports that he frequently receives material sent by residents.
According to the evidence, many of the participants in the races were minors, often riding in groups of several people and without safety devices. Hence the call for increased enforcement with the direct deployment of police forces with full operational powers.
The Piazza Mercato area, a place of historical and cultural importance for the city, is identified as particularly vulnerable to this behavior. The call is for a more effective police presence to prevent risky situations and protect residents and visitors.
The goal, residents emphasize, is to restore safety and respect for the rules to the square, preventing it from being perceived as an uncontrolled space during the night.
