Naples, Gratteri: "The Camorra is also infiltrating tourism; more prevention is needed."

Naples Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri emphasizes the Camorra's presence in the tourism sector and calls for a broader commitment to combating youth crime, focusing on social and educational investments.

In an interview with the Campania news agency TGR, the Public Prosecutor of Naples, Nicola Gratteri, highlighted how the Camorra is not limited to traditional criminal activities, but also has infiltrated the tourism sector, where the money in circulation represents fertile ground for the mafia organization.

Gratteri explained that law enforcement agencies are working to contain and combat these illegal phenomena, but emphasized the need for greater resources and personnel to achieve more effective results.

"If money flows through tourism, it's obvious that the Camorra is also involved in tourism. We are trying to contain and combat crime," Gratteri said. He added: "Compared to previous years, we have positive feedback: very positive data regarding crimes committed, arrests, and convictions. However, we really need to do more, perhaps by having more men and more resources."

Regarding youth crime, the Prosecutor expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the recent "anti-Maranza" bill, believing that the new rules bring limited change. According to Gratteri, the problem of youth involvement in criminal activities must be addressed with long-term strategies, starting from childhood and enhancing the role of the third sector.

Prevention, he explained, must include re-education, full-time schooling, and concrete support for abandoned minors, who are often easy prey for the Camorra.

The most recent data indicate a decrease in crime, arrests, and convictions, but Gratteri urges us not to let our guard down, highlighting how the real challenge lies in social and educational work, which must complement judicial activity to defuse the spiral of crime, starting with the youngest segments of the population.
