The Civil Protection of the Campania Region has issued a weather alert with a Yellow level of hydrogeological criticality for thunderstorms valid from midnight until 23.59 pm tomorrow.
The areas affected are: 1 (Campania Plain, Naples, Islands, Vesuvian Area), 3 (Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula, Sarno Mountains and Picentini Mountains), 5 (Tusciano and Alto Sele), 6 (Sele Plain and Alto Cilento), 7 (Tanagro), 8 (Lower Cilento). There is a high level of atmospheric instability in Campania which is generating sudden, and also very intense, highly localized precipitation.
Such storm phenomena are difficult to predict in spatial and temporal terms because they are characterised by a great speed of evolution.
Precisely because of the nature of these phenomena, also connected to climate change, it is possible that, at the same time, hailstorms, lightning and gusts of wind may occur in individual points of the territory, such as to cause damage to roofs, falling branches or trees.
The Protection reports, in fact, that scattered precipitation, even in the form of showers or thunderstorms, in some parts of the territory could also be very intense. Possible gusts of wind are also expected in thunderstorms. This meteorological picture is associated with possible ground impact phenomena such as: falling rocks and occasional landslides, even in the absence of precipitation;

surface runoff with possible phenomena of material transport; flooding of areas adjacent to watercourses also due to local criticalities (culverts, narrowings, etc.); flooding of underground and ground-floor areas; surface flow of water on roads and possible backflow phenomena of rainwater disposal systems with overflow and involvement of depressed urban areas; falling branches or trees.
