Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Cell Phones in Cells: Investigations Concluded for 41 Inmates. Prosecutor's Office Investigation
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta) has closed the investigation into 41 inmates of the Sammaritan prison who allegedly used their cell phones behind bars to talk to their families.
The law on prison regulations prohibits prisoners from using cell phones or other similar devices. The suspects will now have twenty days to ask to be questioned or to present defense briefs; after this period, the Prosecutor's Office (Deputy Prosecutor Oriana Zona) may request that they be sent for trial.
The investigation began after an inmate was caught in his cell with his cell phone; the analysis of the records revealed the people who had been contacted with the cell phone, and among them there were also family members of other inmates. The investigation therefore involved all the inmates who had used the confiscated cell phone.
