Draghi in Sorrento: “We want a leading South, no more prejudices”. The Verso Sud forum gets underway
The work of the forum 'Verso Sud – European strategy for a new geopolitical, economic and socio-cultural season of the Mediterranean', an international event promoted by the Minister for the South and Territorial Cohesion Mara Carfagna, in collaboration with The European House – Ambrosetti, which will continue until tomorrow, Saturday 14 May, began in Sorrento, in the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
After the greetings of the Speaker of the House Roberto Fico, now the speech of the President of the Council Mario Draghi. Numerous ministers of the Italian government also participate in the forum.
“The geopolitical framework that is changing before us – said Draghi – presents risks, but also opportunities, especially for the Mediterranean countries. Today is a sign of our will to imagine and build a different South. A Mezzogiorno that is the protagonist of the great challenges of our times”.
"The evolution of public policies for the South is often represented as a succession of inevitable wastes and failures. The economic history of the South in the post-war period is however more complex than these lazy prejudices tell us".
“The war in Ukraine has highlighted the danger of our dependence on Russian gas. Italy has moved with the utmost speed to diversify its gas supplies – and intends to continue to do so. The South is central. At the same time, we are accelerating the development of renewable energy, to improve the sustainability of our production model”.
