A case of mistaken identity that lasted about 24 hours, which does not change the picture of the tragedy for the investigators, but makes all the difference in the world for the respective families.
It was not Pietro Caputo, 21 years old, of Torre Annunziata, but of her partner Francesco Mazzacane, 24 years old, from Torre del Greco, the lifeless body found yesterday in the ground floor apartment of the Linate Residence in Segrate.
And consequently, Caputo is the boy still hospitalized at the Fatebenefratelli hospital in very serious but stable conditions due to carbon monoxide poisoning which instead left no escape route for the 24-year-old.
Only the recognition in the morgue of Caputo's parents, who arrived from Campania, brought out the misunderstanding. A situation - they later reconstructed Carabinieri of the San Donato Milanese company – inadvertently triggered by the first responders of 118. On the nightstand on the side of the bed where Mazzacane was lying in his pyjamas were Pietro Caputo's documents.
Added to this was a strong resemblance between the two boys that should have led to further checks on their respective identities but was overlooked in the frantic moments when paramedics were concentrating on operations to save the other boy who was still alive.
