“A foreign prisoner leapt, with a feline leap, onto the roof of the prison in SALERNO for an impromptu and incomprehensible protest”. The news was given by Giuliano Verdino, provincial secretary of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police, who reconstructed the incident as follows: “yesterday, around 12:30, a Moroccan inmate climbed onto the roofs of the Third Section threatening to throw himself off.
Thanks to the prompt and timely intervention of the director and the prison officers, the situation was resolved: with persuasive methods, they managed to convince him to speak on the phone with the Supervisory Magistrate. The negotiation lasted about three quarters of an hour and ended with him coming down from the roof”.
“These were moments of great tension, managed in the best possible way by the director and the staff on duty of the Penitentiary Police”, denounces the Secretary General Donato Capece, who highlights how the protest of the prisoner who climbed onto the roof of the prison in SALERNO is “symptomatic of the fact that the tensions and critical issues in the system of execution of sentences in Italy remain constant.
It remains essential to implement truly structural reforms in the penitentiary system and in the execution of national sentences, starting with the expulsion of foreign prisoners, especially those – and they are increasingly numerous – who, confined in Italian prisons, become protagonists of critical events and violence during detention".
