He had taken advantage of a permit to escape and when he returned to turn himself in to prison he attacked a prison officer.
Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary for Campania of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (Sappe), reports this in a press release.“More violence in a prison in Campania”, underlines the trade unionist who explains what happened as follows.
“This morning, in the entrance roundabout, an inspector was attacked by a prisoner who had come to turn himself in for escaping after being granted a day release from Poggioreale where he was being held. The reasons are incredible: he did not want to return to his cell.
The prompt intervention of other personnel averted the worst for the colleague who was the victim of the sudden attack. By now, attacks and other violent acts in the Campania Institutes are occurring on a daily basis and urgent measures are needed from the Prison Superintendent Lucia Castellano. Sappe Campania expresses solidarity and closeness to the colleague”.
Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe, expresses “solidarity and closeness” to the colleague injured in Salerno and denounces: "what happened, of an unacceptable violence, reminds us for the umpteenth time how dangerous it is to work in a penitentiary. Every day we hear news of attacks on women and men of the Corps serving in the country's penitentiary institutions, increasingly bruised, injured, humiliated and victims of violence by a part of the prison population that has no qualms about lashing out against those who represent the State in prison".
The union announces that it will return “in the square to demonstrate dissent towards those who have left us without protection in the face of increasingly complex problems and to demand protection, functional guarantees and new tools that improve our service, bodycams and Tasers, above all new operational protocols and above all legal protections”.
