The Penitentiary Police prevented a suicide attempt inside the juvenile penal institution in Airola, in the province of Benevento.
The prisoner, a young Italian minor with psychiatric disorders, tried to hang himself with bedsheets in his cell.
Fortunately, the two cellmates promptly reported the act, allowing the officers to intervene quickly.
The young man was rescued by 118 doctors and rushed to the hospital. Sappe, the autonomous union of Penitentiary Police, praised the staff of the Airola juvenile prison for their timely intervention, despite the challenges related to the lack of human and material resources.
Federico Costigliola, regional coordinator for the juvenile sector of Campania explains: "Inside his cell, a minor inmate of Italian origin attempted suicide by hanging himself with the sheets. Since he was in a cell with two other inmates, his gesture did not go unnoticed by the latter, who immediately asked for help from the Penitentiary officers.
The prisoner, with psychiatric disorders, who had already been responsible for a fire started in the juvenile prison and for which the Sappe had already requested his removal, was then rescued by the 118 doctors who arrived on the scene and urgently transported to the hospital. Only thanks to the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police personnel, who rescued him, the prisoner was saved.
Sappe applauds the penitentiary police personnel of the Airola juvenile prison who, despite the lack of human and material resources, manage to maintain order and security of the penal institution, albeit with extreme difficulty".
