The protest of the unionists of the metalworkers' acronyms in Caserta highlighted a strong sense of disappointment towards local politics.
Despite multiple demonstrations and organized sit-ins, workers see the lack of political support as a serious source of frustration. The lack of presence of parliamentarians and political leaders during the procession was particularly criticized, with the provincial secretary of Uilm Ciro Pistone who openly expressed his disappointment. During the meeting with the chief of staff of the prefecture of Caserta, the unions have obtained the commitment to intercede with the INPS to resolve the issue of the extension of the redundancy fund for Softlab employees.
This extension is essential to avoid that approximately 200 workers remain without any economic support in the near future. At the moment, however, no solutions have emerged regarding the back wages and the employment future of Softlab employees.
The unions ask the institutions to guarantee the economic security of the workers through the redundancy fund and to identify business alternatives for the Softlab company. The proposal to involve Jabil, a multinational present in Marcianise, in a regional technological project has been put forward as a possible solution.
However, there are concerns about the Government's choices regarding investments in the technology sector, which seem to favor other regions over southern Italy. The Softlab dispute represents just one of the many cases of employment crisis in the Caserta area, which has seen the electronics sector decline over the years.
The lack of prospects for the future of work and production worries the unions, who are asking for a greater commitment from the institutions to support employment in the territory and promote the development of new job opportunities.
