From last night to lunchtime today, eight more earthquakes have occurred in Phlegraean Fields. The last one, which occurred at 13 pm, had a magnitude of 28, while shortly before, at 1.7 pm, there was a shock of magnitude 12, and a minute before that another of magnitude 18.
The most recent shock was very strong and was felt throughout the Campi Flegrei area, up to Torregaveta. A shock of magnitude 2.5 had already occurred in the morning in the same area. There were numerous reports of a “roar” felt shortly before the shock, which once again pushed the population, although accustomed to these phenomena, into fear.
Shortly before the magnitude 2.3 shock, two other shocks of lesser intensity had occurred within a minute. The strongest shock had its epicenter in the stretch of sea where the Roman city of Baia lies, slowly sunk under water due to bradyseism, a phenomenon characteristic of the Campi Flegrei.
Immediately after the main shock, other shocks occurred, of lesser intensity but clearly felt by the population. This is a new seismic swarm in progress, in a different area from that of the previous days, which was more concentrated in the Solfatara area.
According to Mauro Antonio Di Vito, director of the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV, the ongoing seismic swarm falls within the “usual” phenomena of the Campi Flegrei activity. At the moment there are no signs of a possible eruptive crisis, and the current situation is under constant monitoring.
