Napoli. A new milestone has been reached at the University Hospital Trust Frederick II of Naples, where a double kidney transplant crossed from a living donor was successfully performed. The operation, called “kidney paired donation”, allowed two married couples to donate a kidney to each other, overcoming the blood group incompatibility that prevented direct transplantation within the couple.
“This is the second cross-renal transplant in Italy,” explains Professor Roberto Troisi, director of the Kidney Transplant Center at AOU Federico II, “and it represents further proof of the excellence of our center and the commitment we make to offering patients the best possible care.”
The operation, which lasted approximately 10 hours, involved 35 healthcare workers spread across two buildings and used four operating rooms simultaneously. A complex operation made possible thanks to the excellent teamwork of surgeons, nurses, technicians and doctors in training.
“The two donors were discharged after just three days,” added Professor Troisi, “while the recipients, who already show excellent renal function, were discharged yesterday, Monday 20 May.”
This type of transplant offers several advantages:
Increased transplant chances: It allows to increase the number of transplants from living donors, overcoming the barriers of blood group incompatibility.
Functions better over time: Living donor transplants tend to function better and last longer than deceased donor transplants.
Reduction of the waiting list: Increases the number of available organs and consequently reduces the waiting time for transplants.
Less need for dialysis: In some cases, living donor transplantation can avoid the need for dialysis altogether.
"We are proud of this result - concludes Professor Troisi - which represents a new step forward in the fight against kidney disease. A result made possible thanks to the generosity of donors, the commitment and professionalism of all our staff and the collaboration with the National Transplant Center".
The general director of Aou Federico II, Joseph Longo, he wanted to underline “the incredible teamwork that made this success possible. A job that is based on professionalism and cutting-edge technology, but above all on a constantly multidisciplinary approach that allows us to reach goals of excellence”.
