In Italy, every 22 hours a pedestrian is hit and killed on the roads. This is the tragic data that emerged from the monitoring of the Pedestrian Observatory asaps-Sapidata updated to yesterday.
From January 1st to July 14th, 209 pedestrians were killed (139 men and 70 women): of these, 122 (58,3%) were over 65 years old. In 2023, the Observatory had counted 440 deaths on Italian roads.
In January, 31 pedestrians were killed, in February 42 (a record in the last five years), in March 35 and in April 24. May, with 36 pedestrian deaths, reached a peak in the last seven years; in June, there were 30 deaths and in July, until yesterday, 11, with a case of piracy in Aprilia, in the province of Latina.
“The first half of the year – explain Asaps, the Association of Supporters and Friends of the Traffic Police – has confirmed that pedestrians are the most defenseless road users, especially when they are elderly.
In the first half of 2023, 191 pedestrians were hit and killed, seven more than in the same period of the previous year, demonstrating that the situation is worsening”.
The region with the highest number of deaths in Italy is Lombardy, with 29, followed by Lazio (27), Emilia Romagna (23), Campania (23), Sicily (17), Piedmont (17), Veneto (15), Tuscany (14), Abruzzo (8), Umbria (7), Liguria (7) and Puglia (6).
Numerous accidents occurred on crosswalks, while in other cases pedestrians were hit while walking calmly on the sidewalk.
