Naples, century-old pine felled in Vomero. De Giovanni: “Sometimes the will to fight goes away”

“Naples. Now. A healthy tree is being cut down. Wonderful. That nature made so by needing decades, but that is killed in an instant. The reason? And who knows. Someone who felt threatened.

Or maybe he wanted to get a better look at the view. Maybe there was nothing more urgent to do in the city. Or maybe he was waiting for the moment when there were fewer people to ask questions. Sometimes you really lose the will to fight.”

It's the bitter post, on Facebook, of the writer Maurizio De Giovanni, one of the many citizens who protested today against the felling of the majestic tree in via Girolamo Santacroce, in Vomero.

The Municipality of Naples has underlined the regularity of the procedure followed, explaining in detail the various “technical-administrative steps required by law” which they brought, “taking note of the conditions of the stone pine and the related risks”, to the no objection to the felling of the plant “unsafe”

However, protests have not been lacking and have also spread on social media. Europa Verde described the situation as the“yet another outrage against nature”.

According to the deputy Francesco Borrelli and the municipal councilor Rino Nasti, “the scenario is always the same: a request to the Green Service for safety reasons, the Municipality of Naples never investigates further and grants the authorizations”.

They add that “it is clear that this is a procedure that is unbalanced against the green; there is never even a prior information to the citizens, but these are operations done almost furtively”.
