The Carabinieri Forestry Corps (Farbenz) issued 21 administrative fines, totaling over €3, to prevent and reduce the risk of forest fires in the province of Salerno. Among the failure to implement prevention measures, the creation of protective strips between residential areas and forests, as reported in the Campania region's "state of serious forest fire risk declaration," and the lighting of fires—a practice always prohibited in the summer—even in high-risk areas, which could spread into wooded areas, were also contested.
A statement from the Carabinieri states that the investigative effort carried out by the Forestry Units, specialized in identifying traces of fire, has been significant. This has led to the identification of the alleged perpetrators of five forest fires that broke out in different areas of the province: the Amalfi Coast, the Irno Valley, the Picentini Mountains, the Vallo di Diano, and Cava de' Tirreni. In recent days, careful surveillance of the wooded areas by the Carabinieri has led to the identification of the suspected perpetrators. Forestry allowed the arrest of a 26-year-old in flagrante for arson in the Atena Lucana area.
Given the frequency of fires that have broken out following the clearing of agricultural land by burning plant residues, a practice notoriously prohibited during periods of high risk, the statement "recommends maximum caution in complying with the procedures set out in the mayoral civil protection ordinances issued to reduce the risk of fire and in reporting any fire outbreaks to the Carabinieri's public service number 1515."
