Yesterday a serious episode of violence occurred in the prison of Avellino, where two officers were kidnapped and subsequently beaten.
Furthermore, a inmate, the victim of a punitive expedition, was attacked by other prisoners, who cut off his earlobe and broke his arm, requiring him to be hospitalized for medical treatment.
The news was released by Maurizio De Fazio, a union representative for USPP Campania. For several hours, the police guarded the Avellino prison. According to De Fazio, "it is urgent to re-establish order and internal security in the Bellizzi prison, also through the transfer of the most problematic inmates".
Ciro Auricchio and Giuseppe Moretti, respectively regional secretary and president of the USPP, have once again underlined the “fragility of the prison security system”, repeatedly denounced to the top of the penitentiary administration, aggravated by the change in the methods of custody of prisoners with the introduction of the open regime for most of the day and by the reduction of staff.
Currently, the Avellino prison is short of about 60 units. The USPP has therefore asked the DAP to immediately send the special unit GOM to restore order and security in the facility. The union also expressed solidarity with the assaulted colleagues.
