Piero Sabbarese, a city councilor for “Azione,” announced his candidacy for mayor of Ercolano, but on the eve of the official announcement he was the victim of a vandalism raid in his tobacconist's shop.
Unknown individuals looted and devastated the premises, causing damage to the furnishings and windows, with the loot still to be quantified.
Shocked by the incident, Sabbarese linked the episode to his candidacy, while declaring that he does not believe in conspiracies: "It's shameful. This ugly incident is happening the day before my candidacy for mayor was made official."
Sabbarese filed a complaint against the Carabinieri, declaring: "I hope it was a simple theft, but from what I saw, it looks like something else. If anyone thinks they can intimidate me with this gesture, they are very wrong."
The future candidate, supported by a civic list, also recalled his complaints about drug dealing and security problems in the city, reiterating that his candidacy demonstrates that Ercolano will not go back.
The secretariat of the Democratic Party of Ercolano expressed solidarity with Sabbarese for the vile act, underlining the importance of remaining united against any form of oppression.
The local secretary of the PD, Antonello Cozzolino, reiterated the importance of mutual respect and democratic participation. The mayor of Ercolano, Ciro Buonajuto, also expressed support, calling the incident “a cowardice” and hoping that those responsible will be identified thanks to video surveillance. Buonajuto added: “Ercolano will not go back”.
At the national level, Matteo Richetti, group leader of Azione in the Chamber, expressed closeness to Sabbarese, calling the act “ignoble” and confirming the party's full support for his candidacy.
