Lucia Laura Sangenito, the “vice” grandmother of Italy, lives in sturno, in the province of Avellino, and on Sunday will turn 114 years, just one day after the anniversary of the devastating earthquake of 1980. With forty years of difference compared to Claudia Baccarini, a peer who lives in Faenza and celebrated the birthday last October 13th, nonna Lucia thus holds the title of second oldest woman in Italy.
Her daily life is an example of strength and serenity: she prays, eats with appetite, takes a few steps around the house and never gives up her daily chats with her daughter Maria.
She began working in the fields at a very young age and was never discouraged, not even in the face of earthquakes, wars and pandemics that marked the course of her life. Years ago, following a fall, she fractured her femur, but despite her advanced age she faced the surgery and rehabilitation with determination until she was completely healed.
Also this year, for her birthday, she will receive a visit from the mayor of Sturno, Vito Di Leo, along with a floral tribute and the warm affection of her fellow citizens, for whom she has become an authentic symbol of resilience.
